Caring For Upholstered Furniture

Upholstery is a common feature for furniture that can improve its appearance and the comfort of those using it. Not surprisingly, upholstery will have to be vulnerable to substantial wear if a person is failing to follow the best practices for caring for upholstery.

Position Upholstered Furniture Away From Direct Sunlight

The sun can be extremely damaging to the pigment in the fabric. Failing to be aware of this can lead to individuals positioning their upholstered furniture where it may receive strong direct sunlight. Making this mistake can lead to the upholstery suffering extensive bleaching over the years. If you have leather upholstery, it will also become brittle and prone to cracking. If it is not possible to position the furniture out of the sunlight, ultraviolet blocking films can be applied to the glass or you may simply close the curtains or blinds when the sun coming through the windows is the strongest.

Regularly Clean The Upholstery

Keeping the upholstery clean is another important step for preserving it. It can be possible for the upholstery to trap a large amount of dirt and dust. This can lead to the upholstery developing unpleasant smells, appearing discolored, or even experiencing physical wear more quickly. To thoroughly clean the upholstery so these issues can be avoided, you should both vacuum and shampoo the upholstery periodically. This will remove the dirt and dust that has become engrained in the fibers of the upholstery where they may be extremely difficult to remove without the use of these tools. If you have pets or children, you should clean the upholstery more often as they will be able to track in a sizable amount of dirt and dander.

Replace The Upholstery Once It Becomes Sufficiently Worn

One advantage of upholstery is that it can be replaced when it starts to become worn. Some of the warning signs that your upholstery is approaching the end of its lifespan can be the development of rips or tears in the fabric. If these openings become large enough, they could allow the padding under the upholstery to start to come out, which could make a mess and reduce the comfort the furniture provides. Fortunately, the process of reupholstering a piece of furniture is relatively easy and affordable. Furthermore, you will not be bound to use the exact same type of upholstery, which can give you a degree of freedom to change the furniture to better reflect your current interior design theme.
